To tweet or not to tweet?

Twitter seems to be getting more and more press coverage by the day – but I’m one of those people who’s still not sure I ‘get it’. I’m not sure what else Twitter can offer that interacting with friends on Facebook and posting stuff on this blog can – I wonder if using Twitter would just double up on these (particularly Facebook status updates) or even replace them? I guess one of the main ideas with Twitter is networking opportunities, and being the fledgling freelance writer I am it could potentially lead to work…or at least lead to a few new blog followers! But I’m not sure I can be bothered or if I have anything interesting to ‘tweet’ about, or if enough people I know even use Twitter. Some of my fellow blog friends have joined the twitterfest but none of my real life friends have which is one of the things holding me back (why join if everyone else is still facebooking?). Anyway, I may still succumb but holding out for now until I’m really, really convinced!

Liz, I succumbed to the pressure. While I think it’s kind of annoying to read everyone’s updates…but it’s a great social tool to get more blog exposure and more readers. You never know…an editor may be lurking around…

I use Twitter, but I don’t do Facebook. I’m finding I’m enjoying twitter in that I come across a lot of interesting articles and such posted by the people I follow. I admit, I did not “get” it at first either, but I’m sure once you start using it, and following some people, you will.

I use twitter, and I’m on facebook but I don’t use it.

Twitter is great for when you’re travelling – I used it throughout India and Nepal via my mobile phone to keep people home updated. I’ll continue to use it on my travels, but don’t use it much at home.

I’m still on the fence about twitter in terms of siging up. There are so many avenues of social networking and I’d rather do a few things “well” than a whole bunch and be spread thin.

Thanks all for the comments – Wendy I think I’m with you at the moment in feeling on the fence about it… I do wonder if it would feel like social media overload… but I’m still not entirely ruling out joining, I think I’ll just wait a bit longer and see how much more twitter really takes over how everyone’s communicating.

It is an interesting phenomenon. Being able to follow some of my best friends on twitter, side by side with Mc Hammer (!) and Trent Reznor is still a bit weird. I’m not entirely sold either but I am watching it with one eye…

Not for me…I don’t think I need to tell everyone I’m in the loo…just like some privacy, sometime…! Enough of this social bull thing already…!

hi liz – i’m on twitter, and am a fan πŸ™‚ – even got an interview with the Australian through one of the people I’m following! Less about interacting with friends, and more about building networks of people with common interests…recommend checking it out!

I used to be wary, but now I’m a total convert (uh, a noisy evangelical one). Not as much to keep tabs on people, actually, but it’s amazing for following news/trends. And if you follow enough (or the right) accounts, it can be a surprisingly great source for story ideas

Hi Aimee! That’s great re/ the interview, I see how it could be good that way…

And Abby – I see how you are finding it useful for similar reasons…
